What is lapbooking?

A lapbook is an inexpensive portfolio or collection of mini-books, flaps, and folded display material, that provides interactive space for drawings, stories, graphs, graphics, timelines, diagrams, and written work, from any topic, unit study, book you choose, gathered, glued, and creatively displayed in a coloured standard sized cardboard folder, often folded in a “shutter-fold” (though our family doesn’t), that fits in your lap.

Simply put: a file folder with a few new folds. This super learning enhancer becomes an incredibly creative tool for parents and Teachers. It integrates reading and writing, math and science, literature and critical thinking.

Lapbooking is the creative and interactive laying out in a folder - of information on a chosen topic or from a unit study. Popular with homeschoolers.

Classical learners, text bookers and unit studies alike find projects easy to make and joy to use with ALL ages and ANY curriculum.

Why lapbooking?

We live in an age where people spend more time with computers than with books. And this is unfortunate.

How much better for a child to spend his time with storybooks, as well as scissors and paper, markers and paint and all kinds of writing implements for making his own project.

For sum children the task of writing is an overwhelming chore. Lap booking break the writing into manageable chunks.

In order for a child to “own” information, he needs to handle it many times. He must get involved with the information.

Book making goes beyond crafting with words. It draws on visual and fine motor skills. There is cutting and pasting, drawing and diagramming, mapping and labelling.

Our children always delight in sharing there homemade books with grandparents, aunts, uncles, cousins, neighbours and friends.
